SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under direct supervision by the Librarian Supervisor, the purpose of this position is to provide programming for children and young adults, perform a variety of clerical and computer duties, to assist library patrons in various areas of the library, and to administer library policies. Responsibilities may differ according to assigned area and may include helping patrons locate materials at the different public service desks, checking materials in/out, registration of patrons as computer lab users and working with volunteers. Perform other work as assigned.

Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans and implements programs and activities for assigned area.
  • Assists with specialized tours.
  • Attends workshops and training sessions that deal specifically with assigned area.
  • Develops in-house publicity for programs offered within assigned area.
  • Assists in training new employees and/or volunteers.
  • Assists at the public service desks.
  • Reports or remedies problems with physical condition of library building and equipment.
  • Cleans, troubleshoots and repairs minor problems with computer workstations.
  • Repairs damaged books, videos, and microfilm.
  • Provides assistance to patrons in using and locating internal library resources, and in using computer resources.
  • Monitors supplies and verifies accuracy of all shipment items and publications.
  • Collects money for late fees, copies, donated monies, and book sale.
  • Prepares department-specific statistical reports and/or budget spreadsheets.
  • Assists with acquisitions, collecting receipts, correcting invoices.
  • Registers patrons as library and/or computer users, and processes application forms.
  • Performs work on specialized computer systems such as OCLC for Interlibrary Loans, and Naviline for Acquisitions.
  • Performs shelf maintenance responsibilities.
  • Maintains displays and bulletin boards.
  • All behaviors comply with the City of McKinney Employee Handbook.
  • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in city and department attendance policies and procedures.
  • Performs other assignments as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic principles.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, practices, methods and equipment, including computers.
  • Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical filing.
  • Knowledge of windows based computers and application programs (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint preferred).
  • Knowledge of daily operations of a public library.
  • Perform skilled coordinated movements, such as operating a computer terminal, photocopier, adding machine, cash register, microfilm/fiche machines, and various office equipment
  • Pass a drug screen and a background check.
  • Work varied shifts.
  • Utilize a variety of advisory and design data and information, such as computer hardware and software program and systems manuals.
  • Utilize a wide variety of reference data and information, such as library policy and procedure manuals, ILS manuals, and equipment repair manuals.
  • Requires the ability to calculate, compute, sum, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Organize work and complete in a timely manner.
  • Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Perform semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to work varied shifts (some evening and weekend hours).

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
