General Statement of Duties

Responsible for the enforcement of local, state and federal laws during extra duty assignments.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The principal function of an employee in this position is to provide a uniformed presence during extra duty assignments. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the assigned supervisory personnel but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of this class are performed in an automobile and outdoors. An employee in this class performs the duties of other employees in the assigned department as required or as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

• Performs crime prevention patrols in high crime areas or special events as assigned.
• Answers emergency and routine calls for service.
• Provides a uniformed presence for businesses, citizens, and organizations that contract with the City of Auburn police security and/or crime prevention at specified locations.
• Provides a uniform presence and performs crime prevention at Auburn City Schools and Auburn University.
• Provides assistance to other personnel as needed.
• Makes arrests for criminal activities.
• Enforces traffic laws.
• Directs traffic.
• Interviews witnesses, victims, and complainants.
• Collects evidence.
• Secures crime scenes.
• Takes incident, accident and offense reports.
• Investigates Motor vehicle accidents.
• Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
• Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other City employees and the public;
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations.
• Knowledge of law enforcement training requirements.
• Knowledge of criminal investigation and law enforcement principles and practices.
• Knowledge of equipment and tools used in law enforcement activities.
• Skill in performing law enforcement and criminal investigation activities.
• Skill in organizing and planning work.
• Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
• Skill in decision making and problem solving.
• Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Acceptable Experience and Training

• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Certification or ability to be readily recertified from Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
• Minimum of 5 years of full-time certified law enforcement experience with similar agency.

Essential Physical Abilities

• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively.
• Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to review type written documents in both electronic and hardcopy form.
• Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to function in general office and outdoor environments.
• Ability to intermittently sit, stand, stoop, bend and crouch.
• Ability to frequently lift objects weighing less than 25 pounds and to occasionally life objects weighing 25 pounds or more.
• Ability to climb ladders and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
